Twenty-four years after the peak of the UNILORIN crisis that reshaped the landscape of academic unionism in Nigeria, some of the Unilorin49+ figures who played defining roles in the struggle reunited in what can best be described as a symbolic moment of reflection, camaraderie, and history revisited.

In a single frame stood individuals whose activism, resilience, and sacrifice marked one of the most turbulent yet transformative eras in the University of Ilorin’s academic history. Present at the reunion were: Dr. Adefila, former Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Kwara State Polytechnic; Prof. Poju Akinyanju, former Branch Chairman and former National Treasurer, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU); Prof. Taiwo Oloruntoba-Oju, former ASUU Chairman and leader of the UNILORIN 49+; Comrade Emmanuel Aiyeoribe, former Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kwara State Chapter; Comrade Martins Egbanubi, former student union activist, University of Ilorin; Prof. Ó.O. Obielodan, former member, ASUU Coordinating Committee; and Dr. Sola Ademiluka, former ASUU Assistant Secretary.

For many, the gathering represented more than a reunion — it was a reminder of a defining struggle that tested principles, stretched alliances, and highlighted the power of collective action in defending academic freedom and democratic institutional culture. Two decades after the storm, the encounter was marked not by bitterness, but by shared memories, matured reflections, and a quiet pride in having stood on the right side of history. The Unilorin49+ community celebrates this moment as part of its continuing effort to document, preserve, and honor the lived experiences that shaped the group’s identity and legacy.
