Prof Bolaji Adana passes on at 80

Professor B.S. Adana, educationist and social activist, passed on, on Wednesday January 13, 2021. He was aged 80years.

Prior to his death, Professor Adana lived in retirement in his expansive home in Egbejila, Ilorin, where he had built a school, which he managed alongside his wife, Mrs Olayemi Adana, herself a retired teacher and banker.

Adana had retired from the Department of Guidance and Counselling, University of Ilorin, where he had mentored many generations of students, many of whom had gone on to become professors themselves.

In 2001, his appointment was terminated, along with that of many other lecturers, who were to become the renowned UNILORIN 49+. The lecturers were reinstated by the Supreme Court in 2009 and the termination of their appointment declared illegal.

Upon retirement from the University of Ilorin, Adana was appointed Professor and pioneer Provost of the College of Management and Information Technology, CMIT, of the American University of West Africa, Gambia. He later returned home to concentrate on nurturing younger ones at his Royalton School, in Egbejila.

Prof. Adana was married with three children.

Encomiums have continued to poor in for the erudite scholar both on social media and in the regular press.

According Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the loss of Prof. Adana is a further depletion of the stock of selfless, principled and committed comrades. His roles and sacrifice in the epochal engagements of Ilorin 49 made him an icon of the struggle.

Former Chairman of the Union and Chairperson of the Unilorin 49+ Foundation, Dr. Taiwo Oloruntoba-Oju, also described Prof. Adana as a committed academic, a committed social worker and a committed family man, as well as a lover of justice who never used his position to victimize or oppress others.
